Anoint It All! Pekudei

What does it mean to be “anointed”? Two words in the Hebrew are listed for anointing, cuwk, סוך, (pronounced sook) and mashach, משח, (pronounced maw-shakh).
Cuwk relates to “in the toilet” meaning anoint, anoint self, at all. “And, you shall bathe and anoint yourself, and put your garments on and go down to the threshing-floor. Do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking.
-Ruth 3:3.
Oils were applied to sooth the skin in the dry climates, especially the face. Ointments for health and and healing were also made and applied. The first cuwk is used in scripture is  Deuteronomy 28:40, “You have olive trees in all your border, but do not anoint with oil, for your olives drop off.
Mashach, means anointed, to smear, annoint. Kings were annointed. This was part of the rules of government. 1 Chronicles 16:22 states “touch not mine annointed“. This annointing would be where Mashiach “Annointed One” (an authorized and empowered leader) comes from. Shields were anointed  (Isaiah 21:5, 2 Samuel 1:21). Mashach is also used in Jeremiah 22,14, referring to painting a house with color. The first time mashach is used in scripture is in Genesis 31,13, I am the God of Beth-El where you anointed a memorial stone, where you made a vow to Me. Get up now and leave this land, and return to the land of your relatives.”  This week’s portion, pekudei, tells us,

And shall take the anointing oil, and anoint the Dwelling Place and all that is in it, and shall set it and all its utensils apart, and it shall be set-apart. “And you shall anoint the altar of the burnt offering and all its utensils, and set the altar apart, and the altar shall be most set-apart. “And you shall anoint the basin and its stand, and set it apart. “And you shall bring Aharon and his sons to the door of the Tent of Meeting and wash them with water. “And you shall put the set-apart garments on Aharon, and anoint him and set him apart to serve as priest to Me. and shall anoint them, as you anointed their father, and they shall serve as priests to Me. And their anointing shall be for them an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.” And Mosheh did according to all that HaShem had commanded him, so he did.  Exodus 40:9-13, 15-16

Oil for annointing, shemen ha-mischah . Contained myrrh, cinnamon, sweet cane, & cassia according to Exodus 30:22-25. Made by the skill of a perfumer. This was a Divine skill if you catch my drift. We’ve discussed the oil in Olive You , it’s purity and excellence! Some anointings were done according to the Ruach  (Spirit), such as when David was annointed King(1 Samuel 16) and some were to be done according to The Holy One Himself. What was to be anointed? EVERYTHING! And they were not stingy! On the first day of the first month, one year after their deliverance from Egypt, there stood the Tabernacle! The altar, its vessels, the basin, the garments of Aharon, the garments of Aharon’s sons.

The fragrance of the Bridegroom! The aroma of the Messiah, the Mashiach filled the Tabernacle. Marking the things and the people who were to be set apart to Him! The Sign of the Messiah’s coming!

A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, coming down upon the beard —Aaron’s beard— coming down on the collar of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon, coming down upon the mountains of Zion. For there Adonai commanded the blessing —life forevermore!
Psalms 133:1-3
