Throughout vayakhel Torah will keep our primary focus on the preparation of the Mishkan (the Tabernacle), it’s construction, and the various components. The 10th day of the 7th month later becomes known as Yom Kippur . Think about it, Moses “comes down”, “descends” from the mountain, face glowing, in his hands are the tablets, the very words of our betrothal! Whenever you see the words ‘comes down’ or ‘descends’, may you be reminded of Messiah Yeshua! How He descended to lift us up, to redeem us! This is what Moses must do for the people here in vayakhel (Torah, Exodus 35:1-38:20; Haftarah, 2 Kings 12:1-17; Gospel Mark 6:14-29). The Mishkan was not just a religious shrine made up by man, look how Exodus 25 verses 8-9 describe the mishkan : “And they shall make Me a Set-apart Place, and I shall dwell in their midst. “According to all that I show you – the pattern of the Dwelling Place and the pattern of all its furnishings – make it exactly so. -HaShem
Let’s explore the opening word of this Portion, the title, vayakhel, (ויקהל) and see what we uncover!
The first letter indicates he (Moses) is gathering men!
He must regain their focus after the golden calf debacle and bring them back together as one to the Bridal response they gave HaShem (‘The Name’ of G-d) . Everything HaShem has said, We Will Do and Obey! They had a moment, now they will unite again for the mishkan, for HaShem, who led them out of bondage! Once again, right from the start, HaShem will reiterate “work six days, rest on the seventh” ~number value for the vav is 6. “That seventh day, disconnect from the six and come join Me!”
They will do this work with their hands, of course. Working together as one. Notice the number value here is 10. Our two hands have 10 fingers. There were 2 tablets with a total of 10 commandments. Daniel pleads for perfection here: “Please try your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. And at the end of ten days their appearances looked better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the sovereign’s food. And in any word of wisdom and understanding about which the sovereign examined them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians, the astrologers, who were in all his reign.
Daniel 1:12, 15, 20
Possibly a little hesitant, the children of Yisra’ĕl will have to put the past behind them. The debacle of the Golden Calf and their “goods” they brought from Egypt. To rid their lives of the past, unload the baggage, focus on what is on the horizon! Letting go of the past can be difficult, but Yeshua assures us that His Yoke (this is Torah) is easy, It’s burden is light!
Behold! The appointment of a very extra-ordinary, 13 year old, Betzalel, who going to be given “The Holy Spirit”! Yes, right here in Exodus! He will be the one anointed to be put in charge, to show the people how to craft it all!
Under the staff of Moses, he will teach them, move them forward. He has seen the Glory of HaShem! Moses knows this Mishkan comes through the divine hand of HaShem. He knows how important every detail of this dwelling place needs to be fit for a King!
In our world the manifestation of HaShem’s Glory does not come through human planning or effort. It comes through HaShem. 2 Corinthians 3:5 states, Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from HaShem. (I believe this may just be a tabernacle reference here!)
May we all come to know and trust the rod of the Master Shepherd! May we yield to His Tender Hand and experience His Shalom!
