Are you a Victim?

“I get it, you’re an outcast, always under attack, always coming in last, bringing up the past. No one owes you anything”….these are the first lines to the song, “Sound of Madness” by Shinedown. Sound like anyone you know? Does it sound like you? Are you suffering from victim mentality?

Beloved, No One but a bride can go into the bridal chamber! There is no room in the Bridal Chamber for those with victim mentality.

“But you would not go up. Instead you rebelled against the order of Adonai your God;  and in your tents you complained, ‘It’s because Adonai hated us that he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, only to hand us over to the Emori to destroy us.  What sort of place is it that we’re heading for? Our brothers made our courage fail when they said, “The people are bigger and taller than we are; the cities are great and fortified up to the sky; and finally, we have seen ‘Anakim there.”’ Deuteronomy 1:26-28

The children of Israel were standing there at Kadesh-Barnea, they panicked and re-wrote history! They were the Redeemed! Yet they chose to see themselves as victims. Victims of hate (rather than objects of Perfect Love), victims of deliverance that they wanted no part of (they just kept crying out to Adonai because of their oppression), they imagined the Emori as executioners (rather than a people already judged and sentenced to destruction-by the same God who just inflicted 10 plagues and caused a mighty army to fall without shooting a single arrow).

When things do not go as we plan them, the temptation is to retreat into “victim mentality”.  To free ourselves from blame for our negative behavior, to absolve ourselves of all responsibility for our circumstance.

Everyone tastes disappointment, experiences shattered dreams, and confronts disastrous mistakes. As Moses recounts the events that happened in the book of Deuteronomy to the children of Israel, he is explaining how their fathers played the “victim”. Read again, It’s because Adonai hated us that he has brought us out of the land of Egypt,‘  Wow!  Sound familiar? Take some time to meditate on how Moses explains their lack of trust:

There I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill-country of the Emori, which Adonai our God is giving to us.  Look! Adonai your God has placed the land before you. Go up, take possession, as Adonai, the God of your ancestors, has told you. Don’t be afraid, don’t be dismayed.’ -Deuteronomy 1:20-21

“I answered you, ‘Don’t be fearful, don’t be afraid of them.  Adonai your God, who is going ahead of you, will fight on your behalf, just as he accomplished all those things for you in Egypt before your eyes, and likewise in the desert, where you saw how Adonai your God carried you, like a man carries his child, along the entire way you traveled until you arrived at this place. Yet in this matter you don’t trust Adonai your God,  even though he went ahead of you, seeking out places for you to pitch your tents and showing you which way to go, by fire at night and by a cloud during the day.’ -Deuteronomy 1:29-33

Beloved, when Adonai says “Go”, are you ready to Go?  You, yourself, may be standing at the edge of the “promised land”..will you recognize it?  Dump the baggage! Let go of the bitterness, the complaining, the whining! The guns you carry to protect you are nothing compared to the armor of Adonai!

If I could, I would ask the band Shinedown to turn the “Sound of Madness” into a song to wake up those with victim mentality.   For the Bridal Chamber awaits!  I took liberties to help re-write the song, enjoy:

“Sound Of Madness”
Yeah, I get it, You’re an outcast, always under attack, always coming in last, bringing up the past.

No one owes you anything.  I think you need a shotgun blast, let go of the past, so paranoid. . .Watch your back!!

Oh my, here we go…
Another loose cannon gone bi-polar, slipped down, couldn’t get much lower.
Quicksand’s got no sense of humor. Satan’s still laughing as well.
You think that by crying to me, looking so sorry, that I’m gonna believe you’ve been infected by a social disease.
Well, then take your medicine.
(chorus): Satan’s created the sound of madness, wrote the book on pain.  He’s still here, trying to reign.
The darkest hour never comes in the night. You can sleep with a gun…when you gonna wake up and fight…
for The Lord?
I’m so sick of this tombstone mentality, If there’s an afterlife, then it’ll set you free.  I’m not gonna part the seas for you’re a self-fulfilling prophecy.  You think that crying to me, looking so sorry that I’m gonna believe,
You’ve been infected by a social disease. Well, then take your medicine.
(repeat chorus)
Happy Day
Shabbat Shalom!
