“Look at you, my love! How beautiful you are! Your eyes are like doves— Like a lily among thorns is my darling among the other women.“ Song of Solomon 1:15; 2:2 (He)
“Like an apple tree among the other trees in the forest is my darling among the other men. I love to sit in his shadow; his fruit is sweet to my taste. He brings me into the banquet hall; his banner over me is love.” Song of Solomon 2:3-4 (She)
Attention! This is for “Lovers” only! To those who “Love”! Love in the Hebrew is “ahava”. Its letters, alef-hey-beit-hey, portray a picture:
Alef: Adonai (The Most High God), The leader, First, Gentle, Tame, Ox, Bull, The Head, Strength
Hey: Behold, Show, Reveal, God’s Breath
Beit: Tent or House, The Body, The Household or Family, Inside, Within, Amid
(—Behold! See the double portion of God’s Breath in the word 🙂
“Sh’ma, Yisra’el! Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad! (Hear, Isra’el! Adonai our God, Adonai is one)” Deuteronomy 6:4
Ahhh, the Sh’ma! “Sh’ma” is one of the most frequently recurring words in the Bible. Coming right from the “Words” of Moses, the book of Deuteronomy. The final book of Torah, of which Our Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) quoted more than any other of the first five books. The Sh’ma is followed by: “You shall love (ahava) the Lord Your God…”
Sh’ma is more than a word, beloved! Sh’ma is a concept! An idea of something formed by mentally combining all its characteristics or particulars. This approach is very important to all those who seek to know the God of the Bible! To those who claim a “relationship” with Yeshua (Jesus)! The Sh’ma concept runs throughout the Torah, the books of the Prophets and the New Testament. Calling the bride!
The word Sh’ma is translated into our English Bibles as: Listen!, Hear!, Hearken!, Obey!………Beloved, this is only a picture of what it means to truly Sh’ma! A snapshot that you only see with your eyes, within the frame, what is before you at that moment…in your mind, you believe it to be reality….. Sh’ma is so much more than that!
According to Strong’s (#8085), Sh’ma means: to Listen to, to Give Heed to, to hear with attention or interest, to consent to agree, to yield to, to obey or be obedient to, to regard, to respond to (summons), to cause to hear (to publish). In other words: To pay full attention to—as if your life depended on it!
The first the word sh’ma is used is in Genesis 3:1, when Adonai said to Adam, “Because you listened (sh’ma’d) to what your wife said and ate from the tree about which I gave you the order, ‘You are not to eat from it’”— Adam listened to Eve’s instruction from the Serpent which led to believing that which was from the enemy.
God calls man to Sh’ma in Genesis 21:12, Adonai tells Abraham, “Listen (sh’ma) to everything Sarah says to you—“ and Abraham listened to Sarah because he knew (God told him and he believed) that it would be through his seed, Isaac, his descendants would be blessed.
Adonai tells Moses, in Exodus chapter 7, to go before Pharoah and tell him to say everything He says. Moses is supposed to tell Pharaoh to let God’s people go! Adonai says He is going to make the Pharaoh hard-hearted! Then in verse 4 He says: “Pharaoh will not listen to (sh’ma) you.”— Adonai did this so that all people everywhere would see the mighty arm of Adonai and know that “He is Adonai!”
Are you still with me, beloved? The concept of sh’ma-ing is way beyond listening, hearing, and obeying. It is to surrender! Once you surrender to His Torah, His Mitzvot (commandments) His words become more powerful, more important! Thus the dance between lovers begins!
This dance of love is the romance between the bride and her Bridegroom! As you begin the dance, it becomes a driving force of life! A reason for living! Not merely existing by reason or emotion, not by instinct or response to stimuli, and not by conforming to man’s doctrines, customs, or creeds. Friends of the Bridegroom, this dance has us living by the creative power of the Voice of God! Sh’ma-ing His every word and step!
Every parable Yeshua offers He tells us to “Sh’ma”. After Yeshua told the parable of the farmer who went out to sow his seed, he called out,
“Whoever has ears to hear with, let him hear!” Luke 8:8
“ Here, I’m standing at the door, knocking. If someone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he will eat with me” -Adonai, Revelation 3:20
“My sheep listen to my voice, I recognize them, they follow me—“ Yeshua, John 10: 27
One More:
“ Those who obey his commands remain united with him and he with them” 1 John 3:24
Have you ever heard these words? : “The old testament is legalistic.” “The old testament is done away with.” “That’s not for us today.” “We’ve been freed from the law.” “We are going to celebrate our ‘Christian Freedom’.” Grrr…. I’ve heard these statements from people I love and respect. These are the very obstacles the serpent places in our path. Whispering to us as he did to Eve, “Did God really say….”
Beloved, when we stand, as a witness, and sh’ma the words of The Father, we start to dance! As we dance (sh’ma), over time, we become conformed into the very image of the Messiah Yeshua—The Torah made flesh! We put on His “Garments of righteousness”—the Mitzvot (commandments of Torah), we begin to participate in the moed’im—the appointed feasts and festivals, then we are molded into who we were created to be—The Bride, Israel!
Can we fulfill all the instructions of Torah? No! That is the serpents way! This is “legalism”, this is “organized religion”. The fulfilling is the Messiah’s business. He is the Head of the House! The Bridegroom! To hear His Father’s voice we must move our pride and stubbornness out of the way! We learned in the Torah portion this week that the Children of Israel were warned by Adonai:
“be careful—not to be trapped into following them—You must not do this to Adonai your God! For they have done to their gods all the abominations that Adonai hates!—“Deuteronomy 12:30-31
Sounds a lot like today! Christmas, Easter, Homosexual marriage, abortion, our nation going against Israel (The apple of God’s eye). Offended? Good!—
“See, the Word of God is alive! It is at work and is sharper than any double-edged sword—it cuts right through to where soul meets spirit and joints meet marrow, and it is quick to judge the inner reflections and attitudes of the heart.” -Hebrews 4: 12
Meditate on this weeks portion, Deuteronomy 11:26-16:17. Take a look at how you are to sh’ma The Father. How does your religion sh’ma His Word? His appointed times? His Shabbat? Does it compare to the Mitzvot of Adonai? His desires are clear.
Today marks the first day on the Hebrew calendar of the month of Elul. A time of repentance! Forty days until Yom Kippur, The day of Atonement. Time to make and “About-face”! Come back to The Water of Life! Come! Dance with the Bridegroom! Sh’ma!
Happy Day
