Both Our Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) and Moses tell us we are to Love The LORD Our GOD with All of our individual hearts and minds and strength and at the same time with the same degree of passion, love our neighbors as ourselves.
He has written this upon our hearts. Our hearts will always desire what He desires as we get to know Him. Our hearts long to go up to Jerusalem! Yes! When I first tell someone that I have been to Israel, a look comes over their face and their spirit is showing me this passion for His Holy Land! The Fire of the Holy Spirit starts to flare up inside of them! It is a beautiful thing because His Land is HOLY! It is OUR INHERITANCE! IT is where HE HAS WRITTEN HIS NAME! It is where Our Bridegroom will RULE and REIGN! My heart is eager to return! In the meantime, we have day to day responsibilities. To our families, our friends, our properties, our cities, and our nations, we must set our hearts upon these as well. For in these things we can also see where it is He has written His Name!
Our Bridegroom deeply loves and desires to use us to release blessings into the life of each and every member of this world. He created us to be His Kingdom’s Ambassadors! As members of His Royal Priesthood, Our calling prohibits us from worshiping, hating, fawning over or cowering in fear of any other human being.
The Torah Portion this week was titled Shoftim, meaning Judges. The portion comes from Deuteronomy 16:18-21:19 and in it, Moses reviews the justice for the Israelites. Moses talks about the limits future kings should have on their possessions. Moses explains that the priests and levites should not be paid and should survive on donations from the people. Finally, Moses explains the laws on warfare.
The reading from the Torah this Shabbat, at the Tabernacle in Branson, was:
I will raise up for them a prophet like you among their kinsman. I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I order him. Whoever doesn’t listen to my words, which he will speak in my name, will have to account for himself to me. Deuteronomy 18:18-19
Obviously, the Torah reading points to the Messiah, Yeshua! Moses says, “Pay Attention!” just a few verses before this one. Are you paying attention to The Bridegroom’s words? In reading the and studying the entire portion last week my heart was leaning toward emphasizing Deuteronomy 16:18, so let’s see how The Father tells us to “Pay Attention” to His Words:
“You are to appoint judges and officers for all your gates [in the cities] Adonai your God is giving you, tribe by tribe; and they are to judge the people with righteousness.”
In the Hebrew text, the word “shaphat”(שֹׁפְטִ֣ים), pronounced shaw-fat’, is used. According to Strongs (#8199) this is a verb that means to avenge, contend, defend, execute judgement, be a judgement, judge, govern, rule. The word “Shoter” (שֹֽׁטְרִ֗ים), pronounced sho-tare’, is translated to officers. Once again, through Strongs (#7860), we see the noun shoter is an active participle of an otherwise unused root probably meaning to write; properly, a scribe (by analogy or implication) an official superintendent or magistrate—officer, overseer, ruler.
Now, let’s talk about these “gates” Moreover, “in/at all your gates”. Let’s look through the eyes of the scriptures. First, the Hebrew word sha’ar (שְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ), pronounced : shah’-ar, is the root of where the transliterated English word “gate” comes from. Sha’ar is formed by combining the Hebrew letters: shin, ayin, resh. Painting a picture: Almighty God (shin), The Eye, Look, To See (ayin), and Head, Top (resh). Strongs (#8179), sha’ar in its original sense: an opening, i.e.. to divide, mark off, door, city, gate, or port. I believe Adonai is definitely filling us in on a very important lesson in righteousness about our gates!
Moses uses this word several times in Torah. In Deuteronomy 5:14, Moses talks about the Sabbath and that among the persons who are to rest along with us is ‘the foreigner {b’sho’arecha} in/at/on our gates’. Deuteronomy 6:9 Moses tells us to write the words of the Torah not just on the doorposts of our houses but also {b’sho’arecha} ’in/at/on your gates’. Then comes Deuteronomy 14:28, where Moses tells in the third year of the tithe cycle we are to bring out the tithe of our produce of that year and store it up {b’sho’arecha} in/at/on our gates. Our “gates” are clearly places where the foreigner, the Levite, the fatherless, and the widow can come to rest! They can come hungry and eat!
What do you see with your “spiritual eyes” beloved, when you read the Hebrew text, b’sho’arecha, or when you hear or read the words: “in/at/on all your gates”? If you only see a “gate” in an ancient city in Israel, then let’s dig a little deeper. Pray, “Open my eyes that I may see the wondrous things in your Torah! Psalm 119:18
Our “gates” are supposed to be unlike any other nation or people’s gates. They are to function as gateways, openings to the Kingdom of Heaven! Beloved we all have personal gates we are responsible for. We have an eye gate, an ear gate, an attitude gate, a taste gate, a smell gate, a speech gate, an opinion gate, and so on.
It seems to me Adonai’s desire is for His Torah to be the ruler, the official, the scribe, and overseer of All of our gates. It was later in Deuteronomy 17:14 that Moses says:
“When you have entered the land Adonai your God is giving you, have taken possession of it and are living there, you may say, ‘I want to have a king over me, like all the other nations around me.’”
(Of course, “lets do things like everyone else”) Adonai says if you absolutely need a King then he must be one of your kinsmen and he must follow some Torah as well!
Lets look at the words of Our Messiah, Yeshua. He talks about some gates….
“Go in through the narrow gate; for the gate that leads to destruction is wide and the road broad, and many travel it; but it is a narrow gate and a hard road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Matthew 7:13-14
“Yes, indeed! I tell you, the person who doesn’t enter the sheep-pen through the door, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber. But the one who goes in through the gate is the sheep’s own shepherd. This is the one the gate-keeper admits, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep, each one by name, and leads them out. After taking out all that are his own, he goes on ahead of them; and the sheep follow him because they recognize his voice. They never follow a stranger but will run away from him, because strangers’ voices are unfamiliar to them.”
Yeshua used this indirect manner of speaking with them, but they didn’t understand what he was talking to them about. So Yeshua said to them again, “Yes, indeed! I tell you that I am the gate for the sheep. All those who have come before me have been thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the gate; if someone enters through me, he will be safe and will go in and out and find pasture. “ John 10:1-9
Beloved, look again at the portion of Torah given this Shabbat… Adonai raised up for them a prophet.. like them, (like you), from among their kinsman… Just as He said He would! Yeshua! Adonai put His words in Yeshua’s mouth, and The Father told His People (us) everything He ordered him to tell. Whoever doesn’t listen to God’s words, which Yeshua spoke in His Father’s name, will have to account for himself to Adonai, The Father! The Bridegroom, Messiah Yeshua is the fulfillment of the Torah! He is the Way to Life! Setting Torah b’sho’arecha (in/at/on All your gates) is the road that leads to The Kingdom!
“Pay attention!” [says Yeshua,] “I am coming soon, and my rewards are with me to give to each person according to what he has done. I am the ‘A’ and the ‘Z,’ the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” How blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they have the right to eat from the Tree of Life and go through the gates into the city! Revelation 22:12-14.
In verse 20, Yeshua says, “I am coming soon!” You’ve read it. The Covenant Adonai, The Father, made with His People will come to pass. He is preparing our place! Come! Take the time, establish His Torah as your gate. Make it be the overseer in/at/on ALL of your heart gates, your mind gates, and your physical gates. All your gates! Freedom is waiting!
Happy Day!
