Exodus 25:4

Let’s talk color! My experience learning and teaching haircolor theory makes me no expert on why these colors were chosen to adorn the sanctuary in the wilderness. However, while putting together this information on the meanings of these colors in the Hebrew text,  it occurred to me there is a connection.  Going to Cosmetology School and learning the foundations of all that we do is crucial information to hold on to. A new “Cosmetologist” with license in hand, knowing just enough to be dangerous, enters the world of disorder! Breaking rules, cutting corners, concerned with quantity and not quality. The very core of Haircolor Theory is understanding the color wheel. Anyone who has taken an art class understands somewhat the basis of combining colors to make a new color, all stemming from the three primaries: red, yellow, and blue.

Blessed be HASHEM, Giver of The Torah! Torah tells of the colors blue, purple and scarlet in Exodus 25:4.  Blue, which seems to be a “favorite color” among most people.  In the Hebrew, “blue” in this verse, is teckeleth. (תכלת).  Here you have the letter tav  (ת) at the beginning and the end of the word representing a mark, sign, the sealing of two things together. The kupf (כ) being the power to suppress or lift up and the lamed  (ל) representing the cattle goad, to urge forward, to teach. Seems logical that blue is the color that speaks itself about the sea, or sky, heaven, depth, stability, wisdom, confidence, and loyalty. Blue (sapphire) is one of the foundation stones talked about in Revelation 21 and it was also on the breastplate of Hashem’s most beloved high priests.  Mordecai went out from the king’s presence in blue and white royal robes, with a large gold crown, and also a purple robe of fine linen (Esther 8:15). Once again a picture of royalty!  Even today, this is for His Children :

HaShem spoke to Moses saying, “Speak to Bnei-Yisrael . Say to them that they are to make for themselves tzitzit on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and they are to put a blue cord on each tzitzit . It will be your own tzitzit —so whenever you look at them, you will remember all the mitzvot of Hashem  and do them and not go spying out after your own hearts and your own eyes, prostituting yourselves. This way you will remember and obey all My mitzvot and you will be holy to your G-d. I am Hashem your God. I brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your G-d. I am Hashem your G-d.” Numbers 15:37-41

The blue cord of the tzitzit, a “reminder” of His Commandments!  To wear this garment as directed, sitting standing, or moving about creates a faith like no other! It has to, otherwise The Holy One wouldn’t have said to do it “throughout their generations.”

Purple, argaman (ארגמן) in Hebrew, (pronounced ar-gaw-mawn), is a color representative of royalty and wealth. The aleph, א, is a picture of what is first. The reysh, ר, is the head or what is highest. The gimel, ג, can represent pride, self will, something lifted up. The mem, מ, flowing water, and the nun in sofit form meaning heir to the throne. Purple, like blue, is a constant in the tabernacle chapters of the bible. It seemed to be the most expensive color as well! Purple lined the seat of Solomons personally designed carriage as described in Song of Solomon chapter 3.  A woman of valor: She makes her own luxurious coverings. Her clothing is fine linen and purple. Proverbs 31:22

Even our Messiah wore purple; “The soldiers took Him away, into the palace, the governor’s mansion called the Praetorium. And they call together the cohort of soldiers. They dress Him up in purple. After braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on Him. And they began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

Mark 15:16-18.

Scarlet, shani  (שני), is basically a brilliant red with a tinge of orange. In the color spectrum it is 1/4 of the way between red and orange. Hebrews once extracted it from an insect that in fests oak trees. The color was so steadfast that it was the most difficult to remove from clothing. The Hebrew letter shin, ש, represents teeth, something sharp, to destroy, and The Almighty G-d. The nun, נ , means heir to the throne & faithfulness. The yod, ‘, is a picture of a hand closing upon as to work, a finished work, or a deed done.   Scarlet is mentioned 52 times in scripture, 6 of which are in the new testament.  Here are a few:  Referring to sin;  “Come now, let us reason together,” says Hashem. “Though your sins be like scarlet, they will be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they will become like wool. Isaiah 1:18 .  Cleansed lepers in Leviticus 14, purification in Numbers 19, the color worn by warriors (Naham:2:3). Matthew 27 tells of the scarlet robe placed on Yeshua.  And “the thread of destiny”. As Tamar, daughter in law of Judah, gives birth: Now when it was time for her to give birth, behold there were twins in her womb. While she was giving birth, one stuck out his hand, and the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it to his hand saying, “This one came out first.” But as he was pulling his hand back in, behold, his brother came out. So she said, “How you have broken through! The breach is because of you.” And he named him Perez. Afterward his brother, on whose hand was the scarlet thread, came out. And he named him Zerah. Genesis 38:27-30

After all that information on the individual colors, I noticed that if you combine the calm stability of the blue with the fierce energy of the scarlet you have Royalty! Power! Ambition! Peace! It’s ALL about Yeshua! The Sanctuary is full of a beautiful tapestry of color. It constantly calls us to behold It’s Splendor.  The warmth of the refined gold representing deity, the glistening freedom of silver, and the glowing strength of the bronze, all reflecting the “Light” from the menorah throughout.  Can you imagine! On that day!

In the world of Haircolor combining red and blue make purple.  However, don’t try this at home, there is such a thing as this artificial color has to combine with this thing called a natural underlying pigment in your own hair. (This is part of understanding the foundation of color formulation.) As we are called to different professions, remember to hold fast to the foundations of what it is you do.  All the work of our hands should be done as if we are doing it for Royalty! Because we are!

Blessed be HASHEM, Giver of The Torah! Blessed be HASHEM for giving us Yeshua! I encourage you to enjoy in this Portion of Torah! We are talking about the actual dwelling place of G-d. Take it in! Let His SANCTUARY be your foundation in all that you do!
