The Tabernacle & The Human Body

“I also heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, ‘Behold the dwelling of G-d is among men, and He shall tabernacle among them.  They shall be His people, and G-d Himself shall be among them and be their G-d’.”  –Revelation 21:3

The Tabernacle on earth that G-d commanded Moses to build was a reflection of the Holy One’s  Heavenly Tabernacle. Every detail of the earthly Tabernacle reflects an aspect of the Holy One’s dwelling place above. Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 6 when he is giving instructions about fleeing from sexual immorality that “your body is a temple of the Ruach ha-Kodesh (Holy Spirit) who is in you.” Paul continues to tell we were bought with a price, therefore we are to glorify the Holy One in our bodies. Confirming that the only dwelling place the Holy One really desires is within us.

The Sages explain that very structure of the Tabernacle, constructed by Moses and the Children of Israel, is a picture of the human body. The dwelling place for the Holy One and its implements correspond to the various organs and parts of the body.

The “aron” or the ark, corresponds to the heart. Just as a persons life depends on the vitality of his heart, the significance of the ark, which contained the eduth, עדות, (pronounced “ay-dooth”), or testimony, on which the commandments of the Holy One were written.

The cheribum, the plural for kerub, כרוב, the angelic beings which spread their wings over the ark correspond to the lungs over the heart.

The shulchan, שלחן, (pronounced “shool-khawn”) or table, represents the stomach.

The menorah, מנרה , (pronounced “men-o-raw”) or lampstand represents the human mind.

The ketoret, קטרט, (pronounced ket-o-reth) a Hebrew word meaning sweet incense or perfume, finds its parallel in the sense of smell.

The kiyyor, כיור , (pronounced “kee-yore'”) meaning laver or basin suggests the liquid element in the human body.

The curtains of goat skin correspond to a person’s skin.

The beams symbolize the ribs of the human body.

The Tabernacle was constructed to resemble the human body in order to teach us that every Child of G-d who sanctifies himself becomes a Mishkan (dwelling place) for the Shekinah.

Shalom, Happy Day! 🙂

Good day! Can you send me information (books, articles, etc.) to explore in more detail the identity of parts of the body with parts of the Tabernacle? This information is alluded to in The Tabernacle & The Human Body. Thanks so much!

    Sincerely, Paul W. Syltie, Ph.D.

Did I miss it? How does the Alter of Sacrifice represent part of our human body? Thanks ?

I enjoyed this post. I came looking for information on this subject. Do you have other posts on the subject or have you had further reflections?

This is interesting. Have you ever heard of one’s brain looking like a temple of sorts (symbolically)? I have seen it often but not what you have presented. Just a thought, and interesting either way.

Hi hallelujah girl! Thank you for posting this. I was just thinking about this, so some of these things in the tabernacle represent body processes and some of them represent actual body parts but what do the 12 loaves of bread represent other than the 12 tribes of Israel and how does that correspond to her body, thank you for your help

  6. Another thing about the sense of smell is we know that we are a “fragrance of Christ” in the world plus, did you know the sense of smell was the strongest memory trigger

  7. Another thing that when we eat food, we burn calories, the picture of the burn sacrifice. That’s why we should only put clean food in her boonies, and on the altar of our heart.
