Who is a wise person? He that learns from everyone. Who is Strong? He who subdues his impulses. Who is wealthy? He who is satisfied with what he has. Who is honorable? he who honors others. (Ethics of the Father 4:1)
Torah values are so much different than secular values. Most people think that a wise person is the one who teaches, the strong person is the one who dominates others, the wealthy person is the one who has many possessions, and the honorable person is the one who receives proclaim.
The Torah says the reverse. True wisdom is the capacity to learn. Strength is mastery over oneself. Wealth is enjoying whatever one has. Honor is recognizing others.
“On the Mountain” or Behar is the name of this week’s portion of study. Leviticus 25:1 tells us this particular mountain is Mount Sinai. The exact location where the Torah was given. Everyone needs a Mount Sinai experience. Whenever we study Torah it is as if we are hearing it as our forefathers heard it. Behar, בהר, is made up of three hebrew letters: beit, hey, reysh. The beit represents a house or a floorplan of a tent. The hey can mean to behold, adore, to show, reveal, or the breath of the Holy One. The Reysh is the head, first, top, or beginning.
How are we to partner with the Holy One? What is our part in this relationship? Each section of this one chapter portion of study tells us how we can partner with HASHEM to preserve our nations, have ethical practices, have stronger trust, righteous justice, and exemplify kindness.
Preservation of our nation seems to be what the Shemitah teaches. The Garden He created was to be the dwelling place. The only way to move toward restoring that is to follow The Plan. ~Behold! We control the environment around us. We all as His Created have responsibility of preserving the land in which we live. It is our responsibility. The laws of the Shemitah are, in broad strokes as follows:
- During the Shemitah all private ownership of produce of fields and vineyards is nullified. The crops become free for all so the poor and even the animals can come and serve themselves. No harvesting of the entire crop is allowed to claim ownership, and none is to be bought or sold.
- It is a year of rest from farm labor. Sowing, planting cutting, and reaping are prohibited. Only a bare minimum of care, specified from the halacha, is permitted to prevent plants from dying.
- The vegetables or grass which grow wild, may not be gathered during the Shemitah.
- If someone collected Shemitah products from the field to his house to eat, he was not permitted to store them indefinitely.
- All fruits and vegetables which grew in the Shemitah year possess kedusha. They should be treated as such. Because of their kedusha, shemitah products may not be sold commercially and may not even be transported out of the land of Israel.
The Holy One promises that He will bestow His blessing of bounty upon the one who does not work his fields during the Shemitah. He will provide for him and the years following. Why does man doubt? Jeremiah 17, 5, says, “Thus says HASHEM, ‘Cursed is the one who trusts in man and depends on flesh as his arm, and who’s heart turns from HASHEM.'”
By observing the Shemitah laws we express fundamental Torah concepts. We acknowledge that we do not own the Land. G-d owns it all! The farmer will be forced to turn directly to the Holy One to pray for provision, thank Him for providing six years, and to increase in study of Torah. A whole year off to study Torah, makes me want to become a farmer.
There are punishments for not observing the Shemitah. Exile for one, and non increase of your field. Yields are diminished. The Holy One says, “If you let the land lie fallow one out of every seven years, it will be productive the other six. If not, I will cause the crops to prosper only every other year..”
~Behold! the good news! At the end of the Shemitah year all debts become void!
The restoration thing, it’s real my friends. Grab your Bible, follow not the way of man. Break free from the ‘religion’ and find true freedom in the Torah. The earth as well as everything in it requires rest and regeneration. Speaking of rest, its time! I cannot wait to expand on this!
Shabbat Shalom beloved! May your hearts and minds be rested and refreshed this blessed Shabbat! Be Wise, Be Strong, Be Wealthy, Be Honorable! All to the Holy One, give praise!
Happy Day!
