He dreamed: All of a sudden, there was a stairway set up on the earth and its top reaching to the heavens—and behold, angels of God going up and down on it!(Genesis 28:12)
That night, Jacob slept on the ground and used a stone for a pillow. On that night HaShem revealed himself to Jacob in a dream to strengthen him, assuring him of HaShem’s assistance in all future events. In the dream Jacob envisioned HaShem standing at the top of a ladder that extended from Heaven. Upon this ladder angels ascended and descended.
Why? Why a ladder? Why the angels? There are many interpretations from the rabbis. One interpretation of the angels ascending and descending symbolize the ascent and decent of world powers. Jacob therefore, represents the people of Israel. The angels represent the different nations that have risen and fallen throughout history. The people of Israel have suffered under the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, and the Romans. Each of these Empires rose and fell. Yet standing above it all is the Holy One Himself saying to Jacob, “Behold, I Am with you and will keep you wherever you go” (Genesis 28:15). Israel, through all its oppression, the Holy One has never abandoned them.
We all face trouble, persecution, and hardship that seems to descend on us suddenly and sometimes unexpectedly. Yet the Holy One is above it all, and He is ever faithful to His people.
Shalom, Hallelujah Girl!
