Departing

Please follow and like us:

“Jacob departed from Beer-sheba and went toward Haran.” (Genesis 28:10)
Fleeing to Haran did not seem like progress to Jacob. Jacob’s flight from Canaan to Haran seemed like two steps backward in the plan of the Holy One. On the contrary, the Holy One would use Jacob’s years in exile to prosper him. The heads of the tribes of Israel would be born to Jacob while he was in Haran. The Holy One was with him the whole time watching over him. By the end of this portion, Jacob will return to the land of Canaan wealthy and successful.
The years of enduring trials in Haran under the supervision of Laban surely led Jacob to be frustrated nonetheless. He must have felt like he was “in the wrong place” and his years there were being “wasted”. As we follow Jacob’s story, you may identify with some of his frustrations. People often find themselves in jobs, careers, homes, and family arrangements that feel as if they are far outside of the Holy One’s plans. The story of Jacob teaches us that HaShem might put us in such situations to bless us or to work out His purposes. Jacob teaches us to be faithful wherever we find ourselves.
Jacob’s term of service resulted in the birth of the Nation of Israel.

Shalom, Hallelujah Girl!
