The Straw Man fallacy is committed when a person simply ignores a person’s actual position and substitutes a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position. This sort of “reasoning” has the following pattern:
Person A has position X.
Person B presents position Y (which is a distorted version of X).
Person B attacks position Y.
Therefore X is false/incorrect/flawed.
This sort of “reasoning” is fallacious because attacking a distorted version of a position simply does not constitute an attack on the position itself. One might as well expect an attack on a poor drawing of a person to hurt the person.
It seems to be the church has left out a lot of what The Holy One said. They argue distorted views instead of seeking truth. This straw man sort of reasoning. Make an argument make sense and you will never investigate. Repeating a lie long enough, you start to believe it.
Vayikra, Leviticus, is considered to be the most “Jewish” of all books of the bible. Yet it was given to all people. In all my years growing up in the “Church” I never once heard a teaching, a message, or a lesson from the book of Leviticus. Most of the people I have the opportunity to discuss Torah with who are not themselves Torah observant, will say, “that is the law, that is done away with” or “that’s for the Jews”. These same people proclaim agreement in 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is inspired by G-d and useful for teaching, for reproof, for restoration, and for training in righteousness, so that the person belonging to G-d may be capable, fully equipped for every good deed. Skipping over or throwing out the book of Leviticus, you throw out the very instructions on how you are to be a “called out” one.
I know Leviticus seems challenging and confusing, what is the meaning of all of these laws? Observance of the instructions is not predicated on understanding, but rather on the implicit trust that The Holy One, He issued them! And He did so with good reason. David proclaimed in Psalm 119:86, “All your mitzvot (commandments/laws) are faithful.”
Now HaShem called to Moses and spoke to him out of the Tent of Meeting, saying: “Speak to Bnei-Yisrael, and tell them: When anyone of you brings an offering to HaShem, you may present your offering of livestock, from the herd or from the flock.
Here is the opening two verses of Leviricus. “and He called” is the phrase that provides the Title of the book and the portion this week, “vayikra”. In Jewish tradition this is the first book of study for most children. Leviticus is the heart of the Torah, the foundation, the center of the five books. Yeshua, as a young Jewish child, probably began His study as a 5-year-old in the book of Leviticus. The very Instructions His Father gave us to draw near to Him, He fulfilled! As you can tell from the opening two verses, we are going to be discussing some animal sacrifices. Most people are revolted by the sound of this. Instead of feeling this way, why not find out what The Messiah fulfilled. We are obligated, if we want to understand the work of the One the Father sent. Yeshua laid down His Life as a Human Sacrifice, do we understand the fullness of this?
At the end of Exodus, the Shekinah came down, and His Voice calls to Moses: This is how you will approach ME! Next word, When! It really is a choice ?to wear the wedding garments that is ?! Ok, on with the study.. next up, anyone, is translated from, any man, or adam, אדמ, pronounced aw-dawm. First used in scripture in Genesis 1:26, “And Elohim said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, and over all the earth and over all the creeping creatures that creep on the earth.” Could the Holy One be showing us those who are pure, and holy? For He says repeatedly, Be Holy, because I am Holy!
And so we are to bring an offering, a qorban in the Hebrew. The verb root of this word is, qorab, pronounced koor-rawv, something that brings one near, to come near, approach. In other words an offering, or as some bibles translate, a sacrifice, is something you bring that will bring you closer to The Holy One. To enter into communion with Him. Sacrifices are not the Way to Salvation, they are our Way to draw near!
Want more? The sacrifice or offering, what draws you near is to be a living sacrifice, this version says livestock. In the Hebrew this is a plural word, ha-behemah, הבהמה, pronounced be-hay-maw. According to Strongs, this means beast, animal, cattle (to be mute); properly, a dumb beast; any large quadrupled or animal. We first find this word in Genesis 1:24 ~And Elohim said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: livestock and creeping creatures and beasts of the earth, according to its kind.” And it came to be so. This points to purity. One can only see this as what we bring to The Holy One is that which is not of Adam. That which is not like The Holy One. From you The Holy One wants the animal that is within. That which tries to keep us in bondage.
This offering was not just for those living 3000 years ago. This is about each one of us wanting to connect with the Bridegroom-King. Connecting to The Holy One means giving up ouselves.
I call upon you, therefore, brothers, through the compassion of Elohim, to present your bodies a living offering – set-apart, well-pleasing to Elohim – your reasonable worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you prove what is that good and well-pleasing and perfect desire of Elohim. Romans 12:1-2
