Chayei Sarah

Chayei Sarah, “The life of Sarah”, does not give a bibliography of Sarah’s life, it begins in Genesis 23:1 with “Sarah’s lifetime was one hundred years, and twenty years, and seven years.”  Rashi explains that her life is divided up into three periods, each of which has its own uniqueness. At one hundred years old Sarah was said to be as sinless as a twenty year old. In Jewish tradition  a person does not suffer Heavenly punishment until the age of twenty. Twenty years old, Sarah had the pure beauty of a seven year old (before the use of any cosmetics…or natural beauty). Part of Sarah’s greatness was that all who saw her recognized her purity and innocence.

Beauty in the hebraic mindset is much different than what we see it today.  The Hebrew word translated as ‘beautiful’ in Genesis 12:11 is “yafat”, יפת, yod, feh, tav, an adjective derived from the verb root “yafah”, יפה, yod, feh, hey. This word, usually translated into English as to ‘be beautiful’ is actually a Hebraic pictographic mural of the hand [yod], and the mouth [feh], serving as a source of revelation and inspiration [hey]. Naturally we can see that Sarah was beautiful in word and deed.

There is a little bit of the “life of Sarah” in all of us. Chayei, חיי, pronounced ‘chay-ee’ means age, alive, or appetite. The first we find the Hebrew word chayei is in Genesis 1:20, Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures! Let flying creatures fly above the land across the expanse of the sky.”  Sarah, שרה, comes from the Hebrew word “sar” meaning princes, chieftain, ruler, official, or captain. Sarah’s name is made up of three Hebrew letters, shinthe presence of the Holy One, reyshempowering the head or king, and hey:  revealed or made visible. Sarah was blessed by the Holy One. She will forever live on through the nations she mothered. For the blessed will continue, without restrictions or limitations, to release the blessing of the Covenant.

Continue keeping the “life of Sarah” going. Release her beauty in your words and deeds to all living beings. Look forward each day in great expectation and service to the Holy One. The blessings of Our Father await! Be beautiful!

Happy day!
