Lo, the Winter is past; the rain is over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth her green figs, and the vines with tender grapes release a good smell. Rise up my love, my fair one, And come away. Song of Songs 2: 11-13
Rise up indeed! This week we begin the third book of Torah. This will be a season of being drawn near to The Holy One! Before we can run away with our love we need to take a look at our garments, our lifestyles, our priorities. Are we the spotless bride He is calling us to be?
The book Leviticus is not the book’s real name. The Hebrew name for the book is Vayikra, meaning “and He called“. It is not a book with a bunch of laws, it is the declaration of how to enter in, its exactly how The Holy One calls upon our lives.
As the book of Exodus ended, the Presence of The Holy One filled the Mishkan (tabernacle) and not even Moses could enter. Wasn’t that the whole idea of building the Mishkan?
And HaShem called to Moses and spoke to him out of the Tent of Meeting, saying: ~ Leviticus 1:1
Vayikra el-Moshe, “and He called Moshe…” The Holy One is calling Moses to draw near. The word called in Hebrew is qara, קרא, (pronounced kaw-raw) meaning to call, to call out, to recite, to read, to cry out, or to proclaim. The first this is used in scripture is in Genesis 1:5, “God called (qara) the light “day,” and the darkness He called (qara) “night.” So there was evening and there was morning—one day.”
Once you’ve been called out of Egypt (bondage), now it’s time for The Holy One to tell us what that call is, what it means, and what it consists of. It’s time to reshape our self concept and sanctify our lifestyles. Over the next several weeks we will explore what it will be like to run hand in hand with the Bridegroom.
As you read this weeks Parsha, keep stored in your memory banks, “Extreme Makeover, “bride” edition. This Groom holds the whole world in His Hands!
Happy Day, Happy Reading!
