Torah Study Tuesday is our opportunity to take the title of this week’s portion and see the bigger picture. As we already noticed in Access Granted, the root of Shemini, translated eighth comes from the same word as the word oil, shaman. Eight is a cardinal number, because it is one number above the “perfect” seven. Ultimately, a new beginning! Representing infinity! What we see happening on the eighth day in Shemini is a new beginning! The Holy One is attempting to recreate The Beautiful Garden. My interpretation of the word Shemini from Torah Study Tuesday:
The pressing will result in Mighty Rivers of Living Water flowing through the finished work of The Heir to The Throne sustaining all creation.
Consider the pressing, one of the pictures of the Hebrew letter shin. In Matthew 26 beginning in verse 36, Yeshua comes to the place called Gethsemane. Yeshua becomes very sorrowful and troubled. Can you imagine the Son of the Holy One wrapped in the sorrow that grieved His soul, even to the point of death. Praying to His Father, Your Will Be Done! Not once, not twice, but three times Yeshua was pressed, even as His followers slept.
It will be a pressing moment as well in Shemini for Aaron to face this calf. The word calf has not even been mentioned in scripture since the sin of the Golden Calf. Moses has to tell Aaron to “come near” or “go to the altar” in verse 7 of Leviticus, chapter 9. Moses assures Aaron that this is the word which the Holy One commanded of you to do”. Why? “..so the esteem of the Holy One appears to you.”
John 19, 1-6 tells how Messiah was flogged, had a crown of thorns placed on His head, was mocked, slapped, shouted at, and brought before Pilate, only to be crucified with no guilt whatsoever. Still Yeshua proclaimed, “You would possess no authority against Me if it were not given you from above.”
The Hebrew letter mem is a picture of water. Mighty flowing water. John 7:37-38 Yeshua cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. However believes in Me, as the Scripture says, ‘ out from his innermost being will flow rivers of living water. Revelation 22: 17 states, “The Ruach and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come—let the one who wishes freely take the water of life!”
From the Haftarah reading we find in Ezekiel 36:25, “and I shall sprinkle clean water on you and you shall be clean ~ from all your filthiness and from your idols I will cleanse you.” Here we see the Holy One’s promise of a repair, a new beginning!
The Hebrew letter yod is described as a hand, an arm, a finished work, a deed done. In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were made through Him, and apart from Him nothing was made that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overpowered it. There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that through him everyone might believe. And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us. We looked upon His glory, the glory of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1-7, 14
Another glance at Ezekiel 36, verse 27, “and I shall put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my laws and guard My right-rulings and shall do them.
Next up in the title of this week’s portion Shemini is the Hebrew letter nun. The nun can be a fish, mean to sprout, a son or heir, or descendant. Look how Hebrews chapter one talks about Yeshua, “At many times and in many ways, G-d spoke long ago to the fathers through the prophets. In these last days He has spoken to us through a Son, whom He appointed heir of all things and through whom He created the universe. This Son is the radiance of His glory and the imprint of His being, upholding all things by His powerful word. When He had made purification for our sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Thus He became as far above the angels as the name He has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did G-d ever say, “You are My Son. Today I have become Your Father”? And again, “I will be to Him a Father, and He will be to Me a Son”? And again, when He brings the firstborn into the world, He says, “Let all the angels of G-d worship Him.” And regarding the angels He says, “He makes His angels winds, and His servants a flame of fire.” But regarding the Son He says, “Your throne, O G-d, is forever and ever, and a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore G-d, Your G-d, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions.” And, “In the beginning, the Holy One , You laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands. They shall pass away, but You remain. And they will all wear out like clothing. And like a robe You will roll them up, and like clothing they will be changed; but You are the same, and Your years shall never end.” But to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent out for service to those about to inherit salvation?”
Then back to the yod again. The picture of the hand. It was by the very hand of the Creator that all things were made. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created— in heaven and on earth, the seen and the unseen, whether thrones or angelic powers or rulers or authorities. All was created through Him and for Him. He exists before everything, and in Him all holds together. He is the head of the body, His community. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead— so that He might come to have first place in all things. ~Colossians 1:15-18
However we put the word picture together, tells a beautiful story of purity an holiness that can only come from the One who created everything. The Holy One of Israel. When He is Lifted up, He draws all men unto Him!
Happy day,
