Sing to the Holy One, all the earth; Proclaim His deliverance from day to day. Declare His esteem among the nations, His wonders among all peoples. For great is the Holy One and greatly to be praised; And He is to be feared above all mighty ones. For all the mighty ones of the peoples are matters of naught , But the Holy One made the heavens. ~I Chronicles 16:23-26
April 18th marks the 10th day of Nissan on the Hebrew calendar. On the tenth of Nissan our ancestors were enslaved in Egypt, they acquired unblemished lambs from their Egyptian masters for the Passover Lamb as a sacrificial offering. This was their undeniable withdrawal of Egyptian idolatry, since the lamb was something worshipped in Egypt.
Speak to the entire assembly of Israel, saying : On the tenth day of this month they shall take for themselves — each man — a lamb or kid for the household. -Exodus 12:3
The word assembly derives from the word yaad (yaw-ad), יעד, meaning to meet, to appoint, assemble, gather, make an appointment, set, summon. This is the first time this word is used in Scripture. Somehow, is makes perfect sense that The Holy One wants to set a “date” with His people. To top it off, this is a reoccurring date, for we are instructed to observe the Feast of Pesach (Passover) forever.
The first Pesach offering is spelled out here in Exodus 12:3-11. The word Pesach means to pass over, leap, skip over,or halt. It commemorates the Holy One’s mercy towards His People on the night of the Pesach in Egypt. The Holy One took the lives of the Egyptian firstborn, but passed over or skipped the homes of His chosen. The first Pesach is used in Scripture is right here Exodus 12:11, “So shall you eat it : your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; you shall eat it in haste ~ it is a Pesach–offering to HASHEM.”
The Holy One Himself went through the land of Egypt and carried out the the Plague of the firstborn. There was no angel or emissary to do this. The Holy One’s relationship with His People is direct and personal. No intermediary needed here. “..To Him who smote Mitsrayim in their first-born, For His kindness is everlasting;” ~Psalm 136:10. Only those houses whose doorposts were painted with the blood had the “covering”.
According to Exodus 12:5, the lamb was to be a male that is without defect. “Without defect” here in the Hebrew is tamim, תמים, (taw-meem). Tamim means blameless, perfect, complete, entire. We first find tamim in Genesis 6:9 used to describe Noah. But tamim comes from the word tamam , תמם, meaning finished, to be complete, accomplish, cease, be clean, consume, and come to an end. “Male” is derived from the Hebrew word zakar, זכר, meaning remember, be mindful, bring to rememberence, call to mind, confess, extol, invoke, and keep. Could the Holy One be trying actually show here how He was going to redeem His Children.
Let’s look a little deeper, tamam is made up of the Hebrews letters tav, mem, final mem. Tav represents a mark, sign, or signature. The letter mem represents mighty flowing water. The final mem is like water flowing from the Throne of the Holy One. How many times are we reminded that it was The Holy One who led us out of Egypt with His Strong arm. He is the one who cleanses us with the Living Water.
Yeshua is often referred to as the Passover Lamb. Clearly His Blood that was shed, His Sacrifice, was not for sin. His blood is our kaphar, our covering. Remember, to enter into the Holy of Holies you must have a covering. Yeshua’s blood atonement fills full (or fulfills) the Torah. John refers to Messiah Yeshua as “the Lamb of G-d who takes away the sin of the world”. Peter calls Yeshua’s blood precious, like a lamb without defect or spot.
Consider, a father and his son are looking to cross a busy street. The father says to his son, “Son, watch and tell me when it is safe to cross.” The Father has no problems with sight, so why ask this of him? It is a moment to teach him. Preparing his son to face crossing the road alone. This is the Way of the Torah. Teaching us that our covering or protection, comes from our Messiah.
As we approach this time of Pesach, beginning sundown April 22nd, the Holy One has set a “date”, an appointment with His people. A time for us to clear our schedule as well as our hearts and dwellings. To remember it was the Holy One who heard our cries and took us out of the darkness or bondage known as Egypt. With His Strong Arm He lead us to Himself and presented to us the Torah. Our Way to the Father! Freedom!
Happy Passover!
