But the seventh year shall be a complete rest for the land, a Sabbath for HASHEM; do not sow your field and do not prune your vineyard. Leviticus 25:4

Giving to others without the hope of reward, generosity of spirit, trust in the Holy One, peace, good will, fertility of the soil restored, and a year without quarelling or hostility. Could this be what the Garden was like? Whenever restoration is involved, I picture the restoration of the Garden. Seems to be the paradise where the perfection of man walked with the Holy One himself. Revelation speaks of the Tree of Life when all is restored. What began in a garden, will end in a garden!

This portion of Behar, found in Leviticus 25:1-26:2, our Bridegroom tells us about this Torah based covenant relationship. This relationship is to be an ongoing adventure in each of our lives as His bride. Human relationships have their ups and downs, they are constantly changing. A Torah based covenant relationship is not mortal, we are talking about the Creator of the Universe here!! He does not change. As the bride, we need to become infatuated with Our Bridegroom. This world belongs to the Holy One. Our calling is to sh’ma, שמא, (listen to, absorb and conform to) the words of the Holy One. Our calling and our covenant also say we are to asah, עשה, (build/mold/shape/create something useful with/out of) the very words we sh’ma-ed. The picture of a perfect marriage! We will never be perfect but our covenant partner is, and He is all about Restoration!

We covered the concept of the Shemittah and how it explores our responsibilities in the preservation of our Nations and our partnership with our never changing Creator. Behar also introduces the Yovel, or Jubilee. We are to count the shemittah’s of the land, and ten days after each Shemittah ends, on Yom Kippur, we blow the Shofar to mark the Jubilee! All debts restored and slaves go free. Can you imagine your bank calling you up and saying, “your debt is clear, you owe nothing!”   In the Jubilee year the land also, will have produced enough food for the sixth, seventh, and eighth years!

“When you make a sale to your fellow or make a purchase from the hand of your fellow; one man should not defraud his brother.” (Leviticus 25:14) Clearly the Holy One does not want us to wrong each other. On the contrary, He desires us to dwell securely in the land. This phrase “should not defraud ” comes from the root word yanah, ינה, meaning to oppress, maltreat, or perhaps supress. Yanah is translated in verse 17 as aggrieve and refers to wronging by words, hurting one’s fellow man emotionally or by purposely giving inappropriate advice.

Now with much given much is required. If our fellow becomes impoverished, those closest related to him are able, may come to his aid. They can make him an interest-free loan. No government or charity involvement, just two people. If the loan is not enough the impoverished one can sell himself as a servant. With a reasonable workload and kindness, his obligation is to be paid in full also at the Yovel. As always, according to Leviticus 25:48, “after he has been sold, he shall have a redemption; one of his brothers shall redeem him;”. Restoration is always offered by the Torah.

Dealing with persons outside the covenant, we are never to surrender our coveneant identities or become like the gentiles, We are to continue in the Way of the Holy One, Torah.

After ending chapter 25 with a reminder that the Children of Israel are servants to Hashem!  We are His servants! The Holy One Who took us out of the land of Egypt now instructs us, ” Do not make idols for yourselves, and do not erect for yourselves a statue or a pillar….Observe my Sabbaths and revere My Sancturary–I am HASHEM.” No matter who else is doing it, making  idols, don’t do it! Under no circumstance are we to turn away from our Bridegroom. His Torah leads us back to the Garden. Why else would follow up with the observation of Shabbat and the reverence of His Sanctuary.

This covenant based relationship, my friends has been fulfilled by the blood of Yeshua Our Messiah. Once and for all people He provides the covering of Protection, Provision, Redemption, and Healing. On the Mountain (Behar) we must come to hear the Good News (Shofar). Our Salvation rests there. This covenant is freedom.

Shalom, Happy Day

Hallelujah Girl
