The thirtieth reading from the Torah and seventh reading from Leviticus is named Kedoshim (קדושים), which mean “holy.” The title comes from the words in Leviticus 19:2, which says, “You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.” Leviticus 19 describes the holy community through a series of specific commandments. Leviticus 20 warns against the snares of sexual immorality and idolatry, mandating a death penalty for certain sins. Except in biblical leap years, Kedoshim is read on the same Sabbath as the previous reading, Acharei Mot.
Three times in the portion Kedoshim we are told to “Be Holy“. Leviticus 19:2, Leviticus 20:7, and Leviticus 20:26. These are not Moses’s commands, these are from the Holy One Himself. Kedoshim comes from the Hebrew word kadosh, קדש, meaning Holy or set-apart. In Leviticus 11:44-45 we were called to be seperate from all that is unholy, “For I am Adonai your God. Therefore, sanctify yourselves, and be holy, for I am holy. You are not to defile yourselves with any kind of creeping thing that moves on the earth. For I am Adonai who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. Therefore, you should be holy, for I am holy.” Verse 46 goes on to say, this is for All creatures, “This is the Torah of the animal, the bird, every living creature that moves in the waters, and every creature that creeps on the earth..”
Right off the Holy One says, “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel and tell them: You shall be kedoshim (holy, set apart), for I, Adonai your G-d am holy. According to this portion you CAN NOT be in relationship with the Holy One if you are engaged in idolatrous and/or profane practices.
The division between Holy and non-holy was created by G-d. He distinguishes between holy and ordinary. He alone created the separation between light and darkness, between the seventh day (Shabbat) and the six days of work. This is permanent and is unchangeable!
His Name is Holy! For thus says the High and Exalted One who inhabits eternity, whose Name is Holy: “I dwell in a high and holy place, yet also with a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and revive the heart of the contrite. Isaiah 57:15
There is none equal to to G-d, “To whom then will you liken me? Or who is My equal? Says the Holy One”. Isaiah 40:25
The Holy One is just and righteous, says Isaiah 5:16, “But Adonai -Tzva’ot will be exalted through justice, and the Holy God consecrated through righteousness.”
His Name is worthy of praise, “Let them praise Your great and awesome Name: holy is He.” Psalms 99:3
The Holy One desires us to set ourselves apart for Him. To make Torah the instructions on how we live our lives, to make ourselves holy! And His Shabbat, that the church decided to change to the first day of the week, is very very important to Him! “Her kohanim (priests) have done violence to My Torah and have profaned My holy things; they have made no distinction between the holy and the profane, nor have they taught the difference between the unclean and the clean. They shut their eyes to My Shabbatot . So I am profaned among them.” ~Ezekiel 22:26
Being holy is more than just “being a good person”. It involves being set apart for the Holy One. Here nestled right in the middle of the book of Leviticus is the call to sanctify our lives. More than just the “law” as I was taught in the church. Kedoshim has the instructions from the Father that show me and you how to be worthy of the ultimate Bridegroom-King, the Messiah Yeshua.
Shalom,
