Redemption By Grace

How many times in our lives do we feel as if everything around us is piling up, unsteady, and the nice tidy “walls” we’ve created are ready to crash down around us. Overwhelmed with the burdens that we believe are never-ending. Buried in what we know as life, paperwork, appointments, sickness, heart-ache, and death. As a hairdresser, I’ve listened to complaining, grumbling, gossip, problems, believe me, I’ve heard it all. Rest assured my friends, it is all G-d’s plan.

Coming out of Egypt didn’t seem to be too tough for the Children of Israel. It seems it may have been more challenging taking the Egypt out of the Children of Israel. This week we dive into Beshelach, בשלח, (When he sent). It is all about Redemption by Grace. It was the Holy One Who set the Children of Israel free from the bondage of Egypt. Just as it is for us, freedom is available and freely given, but the hard part is getting the “Egypt” out of us! When we are walking the path that the Holy One sets forth and we seem to constantly run into road blocks, we may become frustrated, discouraged, and unhappy. This is the time it is more important than ever to strengthen our faith in the Holy One. Everything…let me repeat, EVERYTHING happens in His time.

Beshelach is made up of four Hebrew letters, beit {ב} (floorplan of a tent or family), Shin {ש}(two teeth, press, sharp, devour), Lamed {ל} (shepherds staff, teach, yoke), and Chet {ח} (tent wall, divide, half, outside). Beshelach comes from the root word Shalach, meaning to send. We first see the word shalach in Genesis 3:22. “Now the Lord G-d said, “Behold man has become like one of us, having the ability of knowing good and evil, and now, lest he stretch forth (shalach) his hand and take also from the Tree of Life and eat and live forever.”.  Clearly in this portion the Holy One wants the “floorplan” of our homes or families to be designed by his hand, to teach and guide us. He will press us, but we must remain set apart for Him!

The portion begins with the Children of Israel beginning their journey from Egypt to the land of Israel. Of course the Holy One did not send them on the shortest route, he knew the newly freed Nation needed some “fine tuning” and He really didn’t want them to have to fight against the Philistines. Also it is good to note that the easiest way to leave would have been the easiest way to go back.  Moses and the Children of Israel had not even reached the Wilderness when they discovered that Pharaoh and his entire army were chasing after them.  With the sea in front of them and desert on both sides, the Children of Israel were trapped. In Exodus 14:11 they cry:

They said to Moses, Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us to die in the desert? What is this that you have done to us to take us out of Egypt?

All seemed lost, they were cornered, so the Holy One took over. He used His servant Moses to split the sea, He brought in the pillar of fire so they could see their way, and He blanketed the Egyptians in coshek (darkness) to immobilize them. Like a super hero who swoops in to save the damsel in distress. Why? He did it all for the sake of His Covenant. This is our pattern for redemption as well.

But G-d demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were yet sinners, Messiah died for us. ~ Romans 5:8

Redemption has come my friends!  No matter the problems or darkness that surrounds you or tries to overtake you, the Spirit of our Messiah has been sent for you!  All it takes is to cry out ,  “Abba! Father!” No matter what it is you are going through,  know that you are being “fine tuned”. All that happens here on earth is part of the Holy One’s Divine plan.

Shalom, Happy Day,

Hallelujah Girl
